After careers of professional leadership in the United States Army and in education, she brings discipline, intentionality, and quiet reflection to her studio practice. Clay offers a meaningful counterbalance to a life spent in structured, rules-based environments — a space where structure softens and exploration takes root, where she can stretch, bend, and reimagine boundaries through form and surface.
Her goal is to create vessels that invite touch — pieces meant to be held, cradled, and experienced through the hand as much as the eye. Whether shaping a tumbler or a cauldron, she focuses on curves, ridges, and the natural flow of movement within each piece, using gentle proportions and tactile surfaces to encourage a quiet interaction between object and owner.
Through both work and leisure, Melanie has traveled widely, absorbing a rich tapestry of artistic influences — the softness of Asian color palettes, the sharp lines and natural hues of ancestral pottery traditions, and the shifting textures of the natural world through the seasons, especially the rich rusts and golden tones of autumn. Layered glazes, slips, and textured impressions let her experiment with color and surface in ways that echo these influences.
