Lauren Krukowski earned an MFA in printmaking and papermaking from the University of Iowa in 2024 and a BFA in painting and drawing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010. Previous awards and artist residencies have supported her work and research, including the West Bay View Foundation Fellowship at Dieu Donné (2024-25); Time and Space Residency at Peninsula School of Art (2025); Stanley Award for International Research Fellowship (2022), Print Workshop Residency at David Krut Workshop (2022), Guttenberg Arts’ Space and Time Artist Residency (2020), and the Jerome Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship Residency at Anderson Center (2016). Recent exhibitions include “Tacit Knowledge” at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts and “And, And, And” at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics’ Project Art Gallery.

March 4 - April 13: Little Hands, Big Imagination

Exhibit Dates:  March 4 – April 13

Opening Reception: Friday, March 6 from 5 – 8 pm

Exhibit Description: Join us for a joyful exhibit of large-scale collaborative artwork created by elementary students across Haywood County. Each school contributes one piece, made with many little hands and big imagination. All works will be auctioned off to support each school’s art program. In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we’re also partnering with the Friends of the Library for a children’s book exchange, so bring a book and take a new story home!

March 18, from 5:30 - 7:30 pm: Junk Journaling Club

Rush Baker IV will give a lecture about their artwork.

Rush Baker IV (American, b. 1987, Washington, DC) (he/him) embraces uncertainty in his painting practice, exploring the tension between destruction and reconstruction, using abstraction as a strategy to alter preconceived ideas. Baker has exhibited nationally and internationally, with solo shows at Future Gallery (Berlin), Scaramouche Gallery (New York City), and HEMPHILL Artworks (Washington, DC), among others. He holds a BFA from The Cooper Union, where he received the Jack Stewart Memorial Prize for Excellence in Painting, and an MFA from Yale University, where he was awarded the Elizabeth Canfield Hicks Award. In 2023, he was a Trawick Prize finalist and an Artsy Foundations Prize finalist in 2024. Baker was a 2024/2025 Grant Wood Art Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor in Art at the University of Iowa.

April 22, from 12 - 1 pm: Colby Caldwell Artist Talk

Visiting artist-in-residence for 2025/2026 Colby Caldwell, will give a closing lecture about his artwork and work with the School of Art and Design this year.

Colby Caldwell (American, born 1965), once a student of history, has tested virtually every avenue of the personal uses of photography as an instrument of memory. over & under, his most recent solo show, opened at HEMPHILL in Washington, DC in May of 2022. A review in the Washington Post commented, “Caldwell communes with the forest as he denatures it, conveying the threat to the natural world in partly mangled images.”  His work is featured in the newly published, “The Art of the State” book that surveys contemporary art in his home state of North Carolina. Currently, Colby is working on a site-specific installation at the North Carolina Museum of Art, which will open to the public in summer of 2025. Colby was a tenured Professor of Art at St. Mary’s College of Maryland from 2002-2013. He moved to Asheville, NC in 2013. In 2015, he co-founded REVOLVE (which is celebrating its 10th year) an art hub that hosts and encourages trans-media work. Colby also is a founding member of Photo+.

Exhibit Description: Go with the Flow celebrates the beauty, power, and importance of Haywood County’s waterways. In partnership with Haywood Waterways, this exhibition invites artists to create works inspired by rivers, streams, and other bodies of water—both literally and metaphorically. From flowing currents to reflections on life’s journeys, the show highlights how waterways inspire creativity while raising awareness of the need to protect and conserve our local watershed.
