Signature Winds – Woodwind Instruments
July 15 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm
The Signature Winds Quintet will perform on Saturday, July 15, at 3:00 p.m. at the Waynesville Public Library as part of the Haywood Arts Council’s Friends of the Library series. The wind quintet was formed in 2005 and has performed extensively throughout the area during its 13-year existence.
In honor of the area’s Folkmoot Festival, the Signature Winds have prepared an international program along the lines of a tasting party, where the “servers” are in traditional cultural attire and the samples are separated by “palate cleansers.” For the quintet this translates as wearing clothing that evokes a cultural sense and serving up Mozart to refresh the audience’s ear between main courses.
Featured on the July 15 performance are works by Fela Sowande (Africa), Isaac Albeniz (Spain), Endre Szervanszky (Hungary), Kazimierz Machala (Poland/USA), Igor Stranvinsky (from his Russian period), and Carl Nielsen (Denmark), plus Mozart (Germany). Members of the quintet will add comments that give deeper understanding of both the music and the composers.
The Signature Winds Quintet features Kathy Alley on flute, Pat Stone on oboe and English horn, guest clarinetist Joyner Myers from Mars Hill University, Stephanie Lyon on horn, and Mary Thomas on bassoon.
