Dance ARĪS 2017
It has been over 10 years since the Haywood County Arts Council brought the Atlanta Ballet to Haywood County to showcase classical dance – an experience as educational as it was beautiful. With deep roots in mountain folk dance, we have always had dance within close reach, and today our area boasts successful dance studios and the cultural richness of Folkmoot. Given that one of the goals of the Haywood County Arts Council is to expand the types of art our organization supports, we would like to renew old traditions and provide a platform for professional classical and contemporary dance to return to our county. To this end, we are supporting the creation of an annual dance artist residency.
The mission of this initiative is to increase classical and contemporary dance offerings in Haywood County by hosting professional companies and/or individual artists as part of a yearly residency. The residency will include staged performances that bring new, high quality offerings to our seasoned audiences, as well as classes and outreach activities to schools and underserved communities in the region, to increase younger generations’ contact and engagement with dance. Our working title for the residency is Dance ARĪS (pronounced “arise”), which stands for Artist Residency in the Smokies. In future years, we are open to creating endowed (named) fellowships to sponsor artists.
