| International Festival Day Saturday, July 26, 2008 |

| INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL DAY's Passport to the Arts By Sally Mackert International Festival Day is rapidly approaching...and so much to anticipate! At the end of the two weeks of exciting cultural exchange between Folkmoot musicians, dancers, and Western North Carolina, the town of Waynesville will be transformed into a World Bazaar, celebrating music, dance, and arts and crafts from all corners of the globe. On July 26, International Festival Day, from morning until night, from one end of Waynesville’s Main Street to the other, there will be entertainment of all kinds for festival goers of all ages. Young children will find special creative arts and crafts activities indigenous to the cultures of Madagascar, Afghanistan, Italy, Japan, Mexico, and Scotland. This will take place under “The Big Tent” at the south end of Main Street. With their international arts passport in hand, each will travel from one creative experience to another throughout this “World of Arts and Crafts” getting their passports stamped. Children will practice Scottish weaving under the skilled guidance of Marge Warren. Tuscola foreign language teacher, Laura Rogers, and members of the Tuscola French Club will assist children in fashioning Italian stained glass designs. The creation of Mexican tin art will be overseen by Rich Byer and Tuscola Spanish Club members. Betty Carlson and Bob Watson will work with those trying their hands at Japanese calligraphy to decorate fans or wall hangings. Boy Scouts will work with little ones making and decorating Afghan kites, while 4-H Club members and Chris Ammons help others to create and play board games from Madagascar. You’ll see the creative and colorful results of young ones’ travel through the a world of arts and crafts up and down Main Street during International Festival Day. And, if you’d like a closer look, and a chance to join in the fun, call the Haywood County Arts Council office to volunteer at the Passport to the Arts children's area. We would love the help, and you would love this up- close-and-personal experience with our little international travelers. |
